في هذه الدقيقة اللغوية نفرق بين استعمال (خمسينيات) بياء النسب، و(خمسينات)بغير ياء النسب
فالأولى: خمسينيّات: أجاز مجمع اللغة العربية في القاهرة استعمالها بمعنى الأعوام من 1950 إلى 1959، ولم يُجز أن تستعمل (خمسينات) بغير ياء النسب في هذا المعنى
والثانية: خمسينات تدل على جمع كل فرد من أفراده مكون من خمسين، فتقول مثلًا: قسمنا الطلاب خمسينات، أي مجموعات في كل منها خمسون طالبًا
