البطة تعوم في الماء بفضل هيكل جسمها وأجنحتها وريشها. الأجزاء الخاصة بها تساعدها على الطفو والعوم بسهولة. البط تمتلك تجاويف هوائية داخل جسمها تسهل عملية الطفو، وريشها المتيّن والمغطى بطبقة من الزيوت يمكن أن يحافظ على جفاف جسمها ويحافظ على الطفو على سطح الماء. الأجنحة تساعد في الحفاظ على توازنها وتوجيه حركتها في الماء.
البطة لها جسم مضغوط ومستدير يساعدها على الطفو. لديها أيضًا ريشًا زيتيًا يساعد على إبقاء المياه بعيدًا عن جسمها.

عندما تعوم البطة، تدفع ساقيها للخلف لدفع نفسها إلى الأمام. تستخدم أيضًا أجنحتها للمساعدة في التوازن والتوجيه.
