لم تكن مأساة هيروشيما وناغازاكي محصورة فقط في القنبلة التي أُلقيت على المدينتين في ذلك الوقت، بل بالأثر الذي خلفته، حيث أُهلكت المدينتان لعقود من الزمن بعدها.
الأشخاص الذين تعرضوا للانفجار ونجوا من الموت، تعرضوا لإصابات فورية مثل الحروق البالغة والتسمم الإشعاعي. وبعد أشهر وسنوات قليلة، تضاعفت أعداد الوفيات بسبب الأمراض الناجمة عن التعرض للإشعاع، مثل فشل الأعضاء والعدوى نتيجة ضعف جهاز المناعة.
كما كانت هناك زيادة هائلة في أعداد حالات سرطان الدم والثدي والغدة الدرقية والرئة.
وحتى الذين لم يشهدوا الانفجار في ذلك الحين لم يسلموا من آثاره، فقد أظهر الأطفال المولودون بعده معدلات أعلى من العيوب الخلقية والتشوهات.
