في الثالث عشر من رمضان لعام 16 هجرية، يصل الخليفة عمر بن الخطاب إلى الشام ليتسلم مفاتيح بيت المقدس، وذلك بعد معارك ضارية لجنود الإسلام لفتح ديار الشام، وكتب عهدًا لأهلها يؤمن أرواحهم وأموالهم عرف باسم "العهدة العمرية".
